The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us, "'By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and save them. And indeed she exhorts them to contribute to the good of the People of God by freely uniting themselves to the Passion and death of Christ'" (CCC,375). 

Illness and suffering have always been among the most serious challenges faced in human life. When someone is ill, they confront their powerlessness, limitations, and mortality. Every illness can offer a glimpse of death.

Illness can lead to feelings of anguish, self-absorption, and sometimes even despair or rebellion against God. However, it can also promote personal growth, helping individuals distinguish what is truly important and guiding them to focus on what matters. Often, illness prompts a search for God and a return to faith.

The sacrament of Anointing of the Sick serves to confer a special grace upon Christians who are experiencing the hardships associated with serious illness or old age.
